Having difficulty finding qualified skilled workers? You’re not alone.

According to a recent survey by ManpowerGroup Canada, 41% of employers say that they can’t fill open jobs with the skills they need – bringing the nation to their largest talent shortage since 2006. ManpowerGroup’s solution for companies is to build, buy, borrow and bridge the skilled employees needed. So, what does this mean?

Build – Employers should invest in their people. If the issue stems from a gap in the market for skilled workers, employers would benefit from attracting employees early on in their career and offer them a chance to learn and develop the skills desirable for that organization.

Buy – In today’s competitive labour market, companies need to match that competitiveness in order to attract qualified workers. A common way to do this is through increasing wages or offering greater benefits.

Borrow – Depending on what the organization’s needs are, full-time employment may not be the best solution. Acquiring external resources, such as consultants, could be beneficial to get things done efficiently and accurately.

Bridge – Hand-in-hand with Building, Bridging promotes career growth for employees. With generations more eager to learn and grow like ever before, bridging would allow employees the opportunity to grow beyond their predetermined career paths.

At the end of the day, one of the biggest difficulties with any organization is keeping the talent they cultivate and attracting qualified workers. I encourage organizations to ensure they are regularly monitoring what their competitors are doing in order to ensure that they are maintaining their competitiveness in the market.
